Interview
Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Toni Griffin author of Determined Mate.
Hi Toni, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.
I live in Darwin, the smallest of Australia’s capital cities. I hated English with a passion at school and found my strength lay with numbers.
Now, I love escaping to the worlds I create and hope to continue to do so for many years to come. I’m a single mother of one and I work full time at a Casino. When I’m not writing or spending time with my daughter you can just about guarantee that I’ll be reading one of the many MM authors I love.
Determined Mate is the second book in my Holland Brothers series, and stars Jason Matthews and Alex Holland. I’m here to celebrate its recent release in Audio.
Why do you write?
A lot of authors will tell you it’s because if we didn’t then we’d go mad from the voices in our head. I do tend to believe this. I hated English at school… I’m so much more a maths fan… However, when I was leaving work one day Brian Townsend started talking to me and telling me all about his mate Marcus Holland. I went home that night and started writing their story, and I’ve been writing ever since.
Which of your books was the most difficult to write?
I would have to say Steps to You. It took me nearly two years from start to publication, way way longer than any other story of mine. STY is the first fully contemporary book that I’ve written. I also had to keep putting it aside to work on other projects that were due. Thankfully the boys forgave me for ignoring them for so long and started talking again. That book was definitely a labour of love and I was determined it would get finished.
Give us an insight into your main character.
Alex Holland is an Alpha wolf. He’s used to being obeyed and getting his way. He’d big and tough and strong as hell. So when his mate shows up and wants nothing to do with him. Is even scared to being in the same vicinity as Alex, he needs to learn to deal with that. Sometimes you have to push what you want to the back burner for the sake of others.
How much research do you do for your books?
Depends on the book. For Steps to You I actually went and climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was such an incredible experience. Some, don’t need any research, and then others I can spend hours, searching online and reading over any number of different things. I’m currently in the beta edits stage of As Fire Rains Down and this book needed a lot of research. It’s set in a part of the US that I’ve never visited, It involves shifters I’ve never written about and ancient American Indian gods. This book involved the most amount of research that I can remember doing.
Who designs your covers?
The wonderful Freddy MacKay at Mischief Corner Books makes the majority of my covers. She’s yet to send me a cover that I didn’t love. My newest one Kieran is just stunning and I could stare at it for hours.
Meredith Russell, who I also love, has created the covers for the first four books in my Holland Brothers series.
Thank you so much, Toni. I’m looking forward to listening to the audiobook.
