When I was asked if I wanted to participate in Susan’s two year anniversary, there was no way I was saying no. I adore Susan and love her books.
I asked Susan is she could write a letter to herself – after all, hindsight is a wonderful thing – giving advice to the Susan just starting out on her journey. Thanks, Susan, for providing your ‘letter’ and congratulations on a wonderful two years. I’m looking forward to celebrating many more fabulous years of your writing.
Nic xx
I was asked to write a ‘hindsight letter’ to myself, giving the pre-writing ME some advice about the journey ahead. Oh me, oh my. I hope this gives you something to think about.
Dear Susan (or should that be ‘Bloody Muppet?’)
I really think you should be aware of just how drastically your life is about to change should you accept that contract for your first book. Have you got your big girl panties on because, boy, you’re going to need them.
Here’s a list of 20 things (in no particular order of importance) of what you can expect to throw you out of that little comfort zone you’ve been living in for the past 49 years..
- Actually having to learn the craft of writing and having your stuff nicely pulled to pieces and sewn back together again. It’s like being back in English with Mrs. Blazey. (my old teacher)
- Bad reviews. Heart stopping, gut wrenching slurs at your treasured words.
- Good reviews. Happy dancing around the table.
- OMG actual people who like my work… #proud #itsallworthit
- Fellow authors you treasure and would do anything for #mmcommunityrocks
- Having to write umpteen guest posts for blog tours on a range of very diverse subjects including raunchy sex
- Meeting porn stars – I mean #wtf ?
- Meeting stalkers, oops, sorry, fans for drinks (in crowded places, with relevant precautions of course, taking into account meeting strangers can sometimes be hazardous to your health)
- Meeting a multitude of gay men in coffee bars (the rule in #8 applies here too) after meeting them online. Men who are now good friends 🙂
- Joining a writing circle and finding out you’ve just been befriended by a Druid, a Shaman and a bard –all the same person…and being part of a magical place called Talliston (talliston.com)
- Earning money because you love to write! I mean, how cool is that?
- Seeing your books become bestsellers – uhhm, obviously people want to read them then? *scratches head in both bemusement and delight*
- Officiating in a Hand Fasting ceremony at your first gay wedding and marrying two adorable men
- Watching gay porn all in the name of research. Hehe. Never saw that one coming…
- Travelling all over the UK to find places to write about and enjoying cream teas and a pint in lovely scenic locations
- Having the most surreal dinner conversations with family – blow jobs, anal sex, pornography and the best sex aids
- Building your own porn web site
- Being subjected to trolls on Goodreads *shivers*
- Becoming a selfish, self-obsessed driven cow because you have a book to finish and nothing else matters- not family, not the house blowing up, nothing!!
- Becoming addicted to your smartphone, social media and online friendships.
So, if you still want to go ahead with signing that contract, and think you can manage all this and take it in your stride – put that signature on that piece of paper, baby. Because once you do, there’s no going back.

About Susan
Susan Mac Nicol is a self confessed bookaholic, an avid watcher of videos of sexy pole dancing men, geek, nerd and in love with her Smartphone. This little treasure is called ‘the boyfriend’ by her long suffering husband, who says if it vibrated, there’d be no need for him. Susan hasn’t had the heart to tell him there’s an app for that…
She is never happier than when sitting in the confines of her living room/study/on a cold station platform scribbling down words and making two men fall in love. She is a romantic at heart and believes that everything happens (for the most part) for a reason. She likes to think of herself as a ‘half full’ kinda gal, although sometimes that philosophy is sorely tested.
Lover of walks in the forest, theatre productions, dabbling her toes in the cold North Sea and the vibrant city of London where you can experience all four seasons in a day , she is a hater of pantomime (so please don’t tar and feather her), duplicitous people, bigotry and self righteous idiots.
In an ideal world, Susan Mac Nicol would be Queen of England and banish all the bad people to the Never Never Lands of Wherever -Who Cares. As that’s never going to happen, she contents herself with writing her HEA stories and pretending, that just for a little while, good things happen to good people.
