Today I welcome my good friend and fellow Sydney-sider, Kevin Klehr.
AN ANGEL, TWO LOVERS AND NEW YEAR’S EVE
Traditionally, I don’t write romance. I write love stories within my books, and my one attempt at a commercial release in the genre met with mixed reaction. Some adored it. Some vehemently hated it. There was no middle ground. A bit like modern democracy.
One reader complained because there’s a major plot twist she didn’t see coming, so she gave it away in her review. This hasn’t put me off playing in that genre, though.
When my publisher asked for holiday themed stories, I was eager to work on a short romantic project instead of my usual works that take years to perfect. The first idea that came to mind was a story similar to Charles Dicken’s ‘A Christmas Carol’, a favourite of mine ever since I saw the 1930’s movie version as a kid.
So, the gay angel character who many readers love from my Actors and Angels series was employed to be my protagonist’s saviour. Guy initially appeared in my first novel, Drama Queens with Love Scenes, as the insecure angel who befriends Allan, a twentysomething who finds himself in the theatre district of the Afterlife, with no idea how he died. Together they form a strong friendship which carries through to the other books in the series.
In my free short story, Conversations with An Angel, Guy is older. His confidence is much stronger, and he’s learnt a lot more about love. So, in my New Year’s Eve tale, Midnight Angel, he’s continuing his habit of helping gay men find love.
This new novelette doesn’t contain various ghosts of New Year’s past, present and future. It’s Guy alone who shows Luke what his heart truly desires by reimagining his present and showing him a potential future.
Luke is keen on a man named Nate and has invited him and his best female friend over for dinner. The story opens with the stark fact that these guests haven’t turned up. To say anymore would give away the rest of the story, but what I will add is that Guy is good at showing the people he takes an interest in, their true worth, and Luke is destined for love. Just not the way he imagined it.

Dinner is overcooked. The guests haven’t arrived.
But this angel has other ideas. He’s about to grant Luke the New Year’s Eve party he thought he wanted.
