I spent the second half of last year working on the start of a new series with BL Maxwell. It’s my first collaboration and it’s been an adventure. Our story, The Slow Death, will be released on 26th January and is available for pre-order now.
I asked Barb a few questions about co-writing and her books.
Nic: The Slow Death isn’t your first co-authored work so I’m assuming it’s something you enjoy doing. What is the appeal of collaborating on a story?
Barb: I love having a different perspective on a story. There were so many times that we had totally different ideas about the same part of the book. I love seeing it in a different way than I imagine it. Also since you’re a plotter and I’m a pantser it made for some interesting discussions about where the story should go.
Nic: Working on The Slow Death was a fun adventure for me, both in terms of the writing process but also the genre. It’s my first paranormal romance! But I know you have a definite love of everything supernatural and paranormal – gargoyles, ghosts, vampires, shifters! What’s next for you? Anything new you want to try your hand at?
Barb: You’re right, I love paranormal, and I hope you adventure into this genre more. I’m writing a book now about urban explorers in the Sacramento area. I don’t want to give too much away, but there may be a cursed object, or maybe an angry spirit lurking.
Nic: If you were to recommend one book to a reader who has yet to try your work, what book would you recommend and why?
Barb: If I had to choose one, I would choose Freezing Aversion. I’ve had this idea for a while about vampires trapped in the middle of nowhere in the snow. Writing it was like running a marathon because it’s nonstop action, but it was also a lot of fun figuring out where they’d end up next, and what they’d need to do to face the bad guy once and for all.
Nic: You can find out more about Freezing Aversion here.
Nic: Tell us a little about Marrok Blain from The Slow Death and what makes him tick.
Barb: Marrok Blaine, well first off his name means “A knight thought to be a werewolf.” I’m big on what the character name means, and for me this fit his character. He’s very cocky and thinks he needs no one at all, until he meets Zander. You’d think he’d be happy but nope he’s mostly annoyed and frustrated with his feelings. He’s studied the Slow Death for most of his life, so anything he can learn about it is exciting to him in his quest for a cure. He’s independent and doesn’t let many people in, but his friend Grady is the exception, and he won’t stop until he’s done all he can to help him.
Nic: Can you give us a favourite quote or short excerpt from The Slow Death
Barb: “He realized he’d been staring at Alexander since the alpha had spoken, and he also realized he hated whatever was between them. Alexander narrowed his eyes, and Marrok knew he felt the same. He took one more look at the most beautiful blue eyes he’d ever seen, before turning on his heel and storming from the building.”
Nic: Thanks for answering my questions, Barb. And below is the blurb for The Slow Death and the link for pre-order. The book is coming on the 26th January and will be available from Amazon and on Kindle Unlimited.
THE SLOW DEATH
Caught in the fallout of a rare disease, and members of opposing packs, Zander and Marrok’s future as fated mates hangs in the balance.
Alexander Kingston wasn’t destined to lead the East Territory pack, but fate had other ideas. Becoming the next Alpha in his dead brother’s place and managing his father’s expectations is a challenge, one that’s only getting harder with time. When his father, the Alpha is reluctant to accept outside assistance when one of their own is afflicted with a deadly blood disorder, Zander must take a stand against his father or lose another pack member to The Slow Death.
Marrok Blain is part of the North Territory pack. With his unique knowledge of The Slow Death, the debilitating progressive disorder that slowly kills with every shift, he offers help, knowing he’ll be met with resistance from his friend’s pack. What he doesn’t expect is the overwhelming pull to the stubborn yet undeniably gorgeous son of the East Territory Alpha.
Four packs coexisting with rising tensions, and a genetic disorder that reminds them of the common thread that connects them all. Zander and Marrok are the key to an uneasy alliance, or all the packs will suffer. Especially Zander, who discovers he’s got one more deadly fight to face.
