Hi! I’m Kim Fielding. Today I’d like to thank every reader who has ever left a review on Amazon, Goodreads, a blog, or anywhere else, and every reader who has ever sent an author an email or left a message on her Facebook wall or tweeted her about one of her books.
Writing is a strange occupation. We spend so much time in the worlds in our heads, struggling to capture those worlds in print. And for the most part we do this alone. I do most of my writing at the kitchen table. Like right this moment, when my husband’s cooking dinner, my 11-year-old is sitting across from me with her homework, and my 15-year-old is in the adjacent family room, studying her math. Right outside, the pool guys are trying to fix our nonfunctional pump. But even with all this chaos, my laptop and I are sort of an island unto ourselves. Nobody around me knows what I’m writing at the moment. It could be anything.
Writers spend their days and nights like this. Eventually our island expands to hold a few more people: our betas, publishers, and editors. I love this private party! But we tend to talk about very specific things. I once had an extended discussion over whether “ass hat” should be one word or two, and if one, should it be hyphenated.
Finally, our stories—our babies!—are released out into the world. At that point, the island expands to include readers. But even if there are thousands of you, you remain mostly hidden from me. I know you’re out there somewhere because someone’s buying my books. But I can’t see you or hear you. I don’t know what effect my story is having on you.
But then you post a review or send an email, and suddenly you’re visible! It makes me feel a whole lot less alone on that island. And you may become visible to other readers, which means you—or we—can form a whole community on our island. I can’t tell you how valuable that community is to writers.
So again, thank you! I know you’re busy, and responding takes time. But I really, truly appreciate your efforts.
Want more opportunities to come to my island? You should! It’s full of cute guys and there’s a unicorn, a water spirit, and an angel. I have five (!) new releases. I’m doing a Fieldingpalooza tour, complete with prizes. You can find all the details on my website. Please come join me!
