Two best friends take a year off to find themselves⦠and end up finding each other.
Joshua Simpson has just finished four years at Purdue University, but thatβs not why heβs buzzing with excitement. Once theyβve said goodbye to their families, Josh and his best friend Alex are taking off to discover America in an old but reliable VW van, planning on not seeing snow for an entire year.
Josh has always considered himself straightβexcept for that one time in collegeβso when he and Alex are living in such close proximity on the road, heβs unsure what these new feelings mean. Is it because theyβre spending 24/7 together, or is it something deeper? And does it really matter since Josh has only ever seen Alex with women?
While in Oregon, Josh meets Johnno, a sexy but confusing Aussie surfer. While having an impromptu surfing lesson, Johnno helps Josh realize who he is and what he wantsβbut Alexβs reaction leaves Josh confused.
From a Montana ranch to the bright lights and dangerous streets of Los Angeles to a dark and lonely deserted highway in Alabama, join Josh and Alex as they drive around the US, discovering not only who they are, but who they can be together.

βHey,β I said, opening the door.
βHorse.β He always had the same reply. Itβd taken me a few days after we first met in junior high to ask the meaning. Heβd just shrugged and said, βBecause horses eat hay.β Heβd been saying it ever since.
Alex slipped past me, carrying a swivel stool and a small black case with him.
βCβmon, we better do this outside,β he said, making his way through the kitchen toward the backyard.
βUm, okay?β
Mom and Dad looked at me, a question in their eyes as Alex waved to them and kept walking. I shrugged and followed him through the sliding door out into the backyard.
Alex set the stool on the lawn, sat down, and rummaged through the case, bringing out a set of clippers. He took his shirt off and threw it over the wooden railing of the deck behind him.
βHere,β he said, passing me the clippers, a nervous look on his face. βYou better do me first before I lose my nerve.β
βUm, what?β
βShave my head. Do it quick.β Alex closed his eyes and waited patiently, his shoulders tight with tension.
I turned the clippers on, feeling the little black contraption vibrate rapidly in my hand. Alex jumped a little at the noise, then rolled his shoulders.
βAre you sure? You like your hair.β Alex had gorgeous hair. It was a dirty-blond mess of waves that brushed his ears, and somehowβeven if heβd just woken upβit looked like heβd styled it that way.
βYes. I donβt want to worry about getting regular cuts while weβre on the road. Plus, itβll grow back, right?β He sounded like he doubted his hairβs ability to grow.
βOf course it will. In a few months you wonβt even notice.β I paused, waiting for him to give me the go-ahead. He simply nodded and closed his eyes again.
By the time Iβd shaved all his hair off and run my hands over his prickly scalp, he was relaxed again, the tension in his shoulders disappearing. I ran my hands over his head once more, feeling for any unevenness, and Alex tilted his head, pressing into my fingers. Iβd heard head massages felt pretty good, but Iβd never had one. Little noises were coming from Alex as I moved the pressure to the base of his skull and top of his neck. I glided my fingers over his smooth skin, kneading the little knots of tension. His head fell forward in ecstasy as I soothed his muscles.

About the author
R.J. Jones started as a reader and eventually made the progression to reviewing. It wasnβt until two men popped into her thoughts, insisting on telling her their story that she started to write.
It started with one scene. A hot and dirty one in the showerβ¦
R.J.βs initial thought was if she could write their scene then theyβd shut up and allow her to concentrate on other aspects of her day. Not so. That shower scene ended up being 3000 words long and three hours of work. Β And still, they didnβt shut up. Β They told her their entire story and she didnβt sleep for days. Sometimes she couldnβt keep up with what they were telling her and she had to keep a notebook by her bed.
Whilst she was writing theirΒ story a side character decided he needed his story told too. Then other characters followed suit.
You see the problem? If she ever wants to sleep again then she needs to write.
R.J. is a wife and a mother to two boys. She is surrounded by males. Even her dog is a boy.
