Interview – Holiday Spirit
I love Christmas and always look forward to it. What’s your favourite holiday of the year and what makes it so special?
This is probably horrible for a writer of Christmas stories to admit, but Halloween is actually my favorite holiday. I like the Halloween decorations better than Christmas decorations, plus I like a little dark with my sweet, and Halloween does that better. I do still enjoy Christmas though! My Christmas story “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” actually is a sweet romance, but it manages to mix a little “dark” in too.
As an Aussie we don’t really ‘do’ Halloween, at least not like the Americans, but I can see the appeal. I also like the idea of the little bit of darkness you’ve added to your Christmas tale 🙂
Do you and your family/friends have any special holiday traditions?
I don’t know how this started, but my parents, brother and I have whipped cream fights in the backyard the night of Christmas. My brother usually wins, but I have strategies this year!
Sounds fun – messy but fun! 😉 What’s the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received?
My husband proposed to me on January 4th. It wasn’t *quite* Christmas, but I knew it was coming!
Aww… that’s so lovely. What’s your biggest gift giving disaster?
None. I am an awesome gift-giver.
Wish you were giving me my gifts. What’s your biggest gift giving success?
One of our family cats broke a decoration of my mother’s and it broke her heart. About 10 years after than – when I had some money – I managed to replace it for her.
If you could be granted one special gift for the world for Christmas, what would it be?
Peace. Just peace.
Let’s hope your wish comes true some day soon. Do you watch Christmas movies? If so, what’s your favourite all time holiday movie?
Miracle on 34th St. Everyone’s out for their own, and not for the holiday, but Christmas still manages to win.
I love reading stories set in the Christmas season and I especially like seeing stories set all over the world. I love seeing how others celebrate and I love reading about guys getting their special Christmas happy ever afters. Do you read holiday romances? If so, do you have a favourite you’d like to recommend to your readers?
Connie Wills (in the book “Miracle and Other Stories,”) does everything I do in my story, but backwards and wearing heels (just like Ginger Rogers). She doesn’t write male/male romances but she does everything else just right.
What inspired your current holiday story?
I wanted to do a Christmas story that wasn’t pure sweet and had time-travel included. There’s DEFINITELY room for pure sweet Christmas stories, but it’s not my strength. My story has Campbell, the first person to travel back in time, travelling back to 2015 (he lives in 2025) to kiss a cute guy under the mistletoe. The only thing is, he hadn’t remembered that the guy he wanted to kiss was such a jerk, and nothing else goes right either, including the bloody class revolution that “happened” in 2018.
Campbell makes the world a better place, but it’s mostly out of his own self-interest. He wants a cute guy, he wants his mom to be alive, and he wants not to see blood run in the streets.
Yes, I promise it’s a Christmas story! And I think it’s sweet too. In its own way…
The blurb sounds fascinating. Tell us a little about the main characters in your holiday story.
Campbell: He’s 30 and is pretty sure he missed his chance at one true love when he was 20 in 2015. Fortunately, he gets to travel back in-time to fix things.
Devon: the guy that Campbell moves time and space for. He’s kind of a jerk though.
Akhil: the scientist that invented time-travel. He’s frustrated at first at Campbell’s lack of understanding about time-travel, but as he starts to spend more time with him, Campbell becomes more and more appealing.
